My name is Krystal
Monique Pierce and I was born on August 6, 1981 in Washington, DC. I
am the only girl of four and pride myself making it through sixteen
years as the only girl on my mother’s side of the family. Life
was rough, but everything happens for a reason. As a result of all my
father’s, uncles, male cousins, bothers and their male friends,
I turned out to be a very well accomplished athletic female. Because
of them and God I have made great names for myself in high school and
all through college. From winning MVP awards in volleyball, basketball,
and track and field, it led me to one of my greatest successes which
was being voted by my peers The Most Outstanding Female Athletic title
my senior year of high school and getting a track and field scholarship
to Morgan State University.
My freshmen year
at Morgan State University I was awarded the Track and Field Rookie of the Year Award.
My junior year I was crowned Junior Class Queen and my senior year I
pledged my life to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and graduated
with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Management on
the Deans List. Even though my educational career came to an end, I
continued to expand my athletic career through …Roller Skating!!
I began professionally
skating in October of 2003 at one of the most popular skating rinks
in my time zone “Crystal’s”. After one year and four
months of falling, scaring, and the swelling of my brutally beaten body
from kissing the skate floor sooo sooo many times, I was voted Most
Improved Female Skater in the First DC/Maryland Skate Awards. For months
I watched people skate, turning and twisting on their skates and it
motivated me to one day be where they where. However, the first thing
I had to learn was to skate, on beat, on four wheels, with a finger
snap.
Six
months later I decided to spread my wings and become a Butterfly, which
brought me to another one of the tough skating challenges. I went from
freestyle skating (my own style) to organized skating. I didn’t
know skating was so technical. For example: half turns, shuffles, kick
outs, t-bones, I was completely lost.
The
whole experience of just practicing with the butterfly’s has been
a thrill ride. I thank the members for giving me this opportunity to
be a part of their illustrious club and I promise to always work hard
and represent the Butterfly’s to the utmost.
I don’t skate for competition, or for show, or for pride.
I skate because it gives me a sense of freedom.
